Mongoose Argus Fat Tire Bike Review

Fat bikes are the new rage in the mountain biking world. From personal experience, fat bikes give me a real edge in being able to enjoy my ride while getting the thrill of the extreme adventure. These mountain bikes feature big tires, as given by their names, that can take you places where traditional mountain bikes can’t go, nearly floating over any terrain. When I first got my first taste of a fat tire bike, it was mostly meant for riding on the beach or in the snow. In the most recent years, biking technology has made the fat tire bikes much lighter, faster, stronger, and a great choice from the regular everyday riding experience.

Evaluating the Mongoose Argus Fat Bike

The Mongoose Argus Fat Tire Bike gives the rider the offering of a high-end fat tire bike that is a great enjoyable time when riding in almost any terrain.

Design

The Mongoose brand took a completely different approach when designing the Argus fat bike. Whereas there older models felt kind of sluggish and heavier than most other bikes, this model has a sleek style and performance that will get you through almost any terrain. This bike is built with a tectonic T2 aluminum frame and after hand testing it through some of the toughest trails in Southern California, there’s no denying this bike’s strength and durability. The response time is what I was most impressed about. With the ability to make sharp turns on steep hills and mountainside declines. Beyond this bike’s beautiful frame, it really is constructed to draw many eyes. The design of this bike’s wheels and tires is something to really appreciate on this fat bike. This Argus’s cutout wheels allow for it’s stylish red tube to illuminate through and add a neat effect as the bike rolls. Grasping the tube is the bike’s 95 mm ID rims surrounded by this bike’s large 4.8” tires which really are what make it stand out. I wouldn’t have chosen to test this bike out if it weren’t for its sleek design coupled with it’s thunderous fat wheels.

Components

The Mongoose Argus’s frame is nicely complemented by its rigid fork. This allows you to expect a great bike when receiving and have the option to really upgrade it later on. The aluminum fork is 26 inches long and has a steerer that is 9 mm x 135mm. This rigid suspension fork is where you can feel the bike’s rigidity edge. I was taken back from how well it took on bumps along the harder trails and turns.

For brakes, the Argus is tailored with fully hydraulic disc brakes. Specifically the Tektro HD-M290 with 180mm rotors.  For a fat bike it’s good to have a beefy set of brakes, but this setup is incredibly impressive. These brakes are very smooth and can get you to a complete stop in almost any situation. Compared to a lightweight cross country bike, this bike’s brakes are nothing to play with. I was able to come to a complete stop riding downhill at full speed and even saved myself from potential injury thanks to this bike’s brakes. For a drivetrain, the Mongoose Argus features an impressive Shimano Deore RD-M6000 setup grouped with Shimano SL-610, 10 shifters. This is a great feature because having the choice for 10 different shifters really allows you as the rider to decide which gear best fits your riding style. Whether its up or downhill, this bike’s shifters can handle it

Riding Capability

After analyzing this fat bike for all it’s different features, I couldn’t wait to actually get out there and ride it. I took the Argus through all the fat bike trails and it did well in all of them.  Whether it was beach riding, snow riding, trail riding, or road riding this bike managed to pace through them all.  It really felt at home when riding and I was able to comfortably put on quite a few miles thanks to comfortability. Given the low pressure in the tires, you really don’t miss the suspension components because of the natural spring you get as a fat bike. If anything I felt that it handled flat surfaced trails better than my full suspension cross country bike because of the way it seemed to float through soft ground and numerous bumps.

Setup

When first delivered, I only faced a couple of glitches to really get the Mongoose Argus bike setup the way I preferred. The front derailleur hanger came a little loose. This led me to take it to a local bike shop which managed to get it fixed in no time. This is something that ran into problems with other bikes in the past so it usually comes as a problem with new bikes. The Argus comes with very high-end components that are very common in nearly every local bike shop, so if there are any problems or this bike will need any fixing or upgrades of your liking, it shouldn’t be any issue to take it in and see how you can customize it. After the first couple of miles riding this bike, I know that it’ll be able to go the distance and last a thousand of miles without having too many faults.

Conclusion

When choosing a fat bike out there that is both stylish and can get the job done, there’s really so many that you can choose from. From my personal experience, the Mongoose Argus is one of the best choices if you are looking for a stylish yet durable fat bike. This bike comes with so many great features that will truly make you feel it’s quality when riding. It is lightweight for its size and mass, while being comfortable to handle. This bike might be a little pricey and leans toward the expensive side of bikes, but as far as longevity, it will definitely last you a long time. This is a solid investment for a Mongoose Fat Bike and our team knows you won’t be disappointed when choosing the Argus.
