Vilano Diverse 3.0 Review

While not our normal cup of tea here at Mountain Bikes Lab, the Vilano Diverse 3.0 is an excellent road bike and we felt that it was more than worth our time to give you an in depth review on our team’s time with it. One of our team members has a 4 mile commute to her day job every day and she rides the Vilano Diverse 3.0 every time she bikes to work. We have known this for some time now but since we have never reviewed anything but mountain bikes in the past we decided against reviewing the Vilano diverse 3.0. Recently we have begun to test all of our mountain bikes on both urban roads, as well as using them for commutes to better understand how they might serve as dual purpose bikes.

Vilano Diverse 3.0 Road Bike Review

Now we feel like it is the right time to introduce our first full road bike review, a review of the Vilano Diverse 3.0 which has been used by our teams editor for over two years. The rest of this review will be written from her perspective and is a collaborative effort between her, myself, and the rest of our team that also tested the Vilano Diverse 3.0.

Riding the Vilano Diverse 3.0

I was born a bike enthusiast, and ever since I can remember I have loved the feeling of freedom that I get when sitting on a bike. I imagine its similar to what cowboys felt sitting upon their horse looking out at the wilderness a few hundred years ago. A sense that no matter what happens, if you wanted to you could take off and go where ever your heart desires. Biking for me has always been something close to my heart, and that feeling of freedom that I had as a child while riding on my bike with training wheels has never left me. Even now, as I commute to work every day on my Vilano Diverse 3.0, wishing that the two wheels below me were taking me to someplace else, the ride itself still feels magical. It’s the reason I decided to join mountain bikes lab, the reason that I am so passionate about the world of biking, and the reason why I want to bring accessible biking information to everyone who feels like that feeling might be out of their reach.

I know from personal experience that commuting to work normally everyone’s least favorite part of their day. From sitting in traffic, to finding parking, to waiting for your AC to come on during the summer, driving just isn’t that much fun. This is why, when I got lucky enough to find a job only about four miles from my house I decided that I would start biking to work. After testing out a few of my friends bikes and reading reviews online I settled on the Vilano Diverse, back then it was the Vilano 1.0 but after four years I recently upgraded to the Vilano 3.0 and have been thrilled with it for the past 11 months.

Although I know that not everyone can commute to work every day, I strongly belive that if you are within 7 miles of your work you should consider starting to bike rather than drive. With an average biking speed of 15 miles per hour meaning that it would take you less than 30 minues on your new Vilano Diverse 3.0. I have also noticed a huge improvement in not only my strength and cardio, but my mood, energy levels, and disposition at work. My experiences are no anecdotal and numerous studies have shown that biking to work  can lead to numerous health benefits.

When I first decided that I would start commuting to work it was for a combination of two reason. First, I truly hated my commute every morning. Waking up at 7 am just to sit through 1:30 minutes of traffic was simply not enjoyable. When I got my new job, the place where I currently work, I was still sitting through 45 minutes of traffic but I was only traveling about 4.5 miles, this was when I had had enough and I bought my first Vilano Diverse Road bike. Fast forward to today and I am on my second Vilano Diverse, the Vilano Diverse 3.0 and it rides perfectly.

Although my commute isn’t too long, it is long enough where I wouldn’t want a low quality bike that would fall apart after a few months. This is one of the biggest problems I encounter when trying to convince people to bike to work. They think that the only way to find a quality road bike is to spend thousands of dollars which turns them off to the idea completely. The Vilano diverse 3.0 is the opposite of that. For less than $500 you will be getting a road bike that can handle not only your commute to work but casual riding as much as your heart desires. Over the past 11 months that I have had this bike I have ridden it to work almost everyday (even in the midst of this damn pandemic!) and have totaled over 1,000 miles on it. Though I’ve had to fill the tires with air a couple times, the Vilano Diverse 3.0 has been essentially the perfect bike.

While riding the Vilano Diverse 3.0 I am comfortable, and in control, two things that have been increasingly absent in the world we live it. Although the Vilano Diverse 3.0 specs are not the greatest in the world, it does have some name brand components that give the bike great overall performance. Probably my favorite component on the bike is the Mizzu Microshift Derailleurs while allow me to easily and efficiently move up and down through the Vilano Diverse 3.0’s 24 speeds. Be sure to read our derailleurs guide in case you want to learn more.

Overall the riding experience of this bike is at the level that I would expect for a $600 or $700 bike and you can get it for less than $450 which is pretty incredible. The assembly was also very straight forward though if you at all uncomfortable assembling your Vilano Diverse 3.0 yourself we highly recommend bringing it to a shop which will do it professionally for a reasonable price.

How is the Vilano Diverse 3.0 Performance Hybrid Road Bike so inexpensive?

If you are a bit skeptical about how you can get a high quality bike like the Vilano Diverse 3.0 performance hybrid road bike as such a low price than you are not alone. Many people that I have shown my bike to have asked me that exact question and at first are unsure of my answer. The reason if simply that Vilano wants to make bikes like the Vilano Diverse 3.0 that are high quality, affordable, and durable enough to last you years and years of use. They are a straight to consumer brand which means you are basically paying the wholesale price when you buy a bike like the Vilano Diverse 3.0. No paying for warehouse or storefront rent, no paying for a salespersons salary, no paying for costly marketing and advertising. This allows Vilano to pass on those savings to the customers and provide an excellent quality bike for an extremely low price.

Conclusion

To end this review of the Vilano Diverse 3.0 performance hybrid road bike I would like to say that it has been great. Everything from buying, to assembling, to riding my Vilano Diverse 3.0 has been nothing short of excellent and I would personally recommend this bike to anyone who is even considering starting to commute to work, or simply someone who is looking for a new bike to ride around town. For me biking has always been something that can take me to a new place; a place where the troubles of the world fade away, and, even if just for an hour, I can feel like this is the world I want to live in. I lost that feeling for a long time as I went through college and the first few years of my career, and when I started commuting to work and biking on my Vilano Diverse 3.0 again I started to get that feeling back, and there is no greater feeling in the world than sitting on a bike knowing that you are free.
